Sony is removing Cyberpunk 2077 from PlayStation Store after public outcry
Sony Corp. has removed CD Projekt SA’s Cyberpunk 2077 from its PlayStation Store and is offering full refunds, taking unusual steps to appease customers enraged by bugs affecting one of the most anticipated gaming blockbusters of the year.
The sweeping move came after the console version of Cyberpunk 2077 launched on December 10 – after several delays – to mostly mediocre reviews and an online outcry from gamers frustrated with its poor performance. Warsaw-based developer CD Projekt has offered refunds to all disappointed gamers, but Sony is going one step further by removing the game from its store entirely.
Shares of CD Projekt have plunged by more than a third in six days. On Monday, the developers posted a message on Twitter saying they “should have paid more attention to improving the game on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.” But the company had not authorized its refund offer from console makers Sony or Microsoft Corp., both of which have strict refund policies. This week, many players who requested refunds found themselves out of luck.
It’s rare for a game to be removed from digital stores so soon after release. Previous examples include Square Enix Holdings Co.’s Final Fantasy XIV, which was taken offline in 2010 for review following a disastrous launch, and Amazon.com Inc.’s Crucible, removed from most PC stores. early this year and canceled thereafter.
